The women’s golf team competed individuallly at the Warrior Invitational tournament. The golfers usually compete as a team, but due to the schedule and illness only three golfers competed.
“This was a Monday and Tuesday tournament and Whitworth is about academics, and there was a couple of tests that needed to be taken,” head women’s golf coach Katie Fuqua said. “We also had a girl that was injured and couldn’t play.”
Senior Emily Guthrie, a two-sport athlete at Whitworth was out this week due to a torn ACL from her recent basketball season. She said she is resting up and will be out on the green for her next tournament.
Three freshman competed for the first time this spring this weekend and were the only three competitors for the Pirates. Yvonne LaCoursiere scored a 90-84-174, Chelsea Bayley shot a 99-95-194, and Cindy Tapia scored a 105-95-200.
“All of us were down, but it’s the beginning of the season, and we’re really trying to prepare for conference.” Bayley said. “It was a good learning experience.
This was the first tournament of the spring for the golf team, and although the women competed individually, it was beneficial to get back on the green for the first time this season according to Fuqua.
It was a rough weekend for the these individuals, but it hasn’t put a damper on their hopes for this upcoming season, and they are hopeful that their other teammates recover soon.
“We’re just really trying to get healthy for our next tournament,” Bayley said.
The women’s golf team competes again in Kaneohe Hawaii and Oahu, Hawaii on March 26 and 27.
