All over campus each Friday, students may begin to spot Whitworth apparel. The Whitworth Department of Human Resources and the Office of the President have come together to begin a new tradition on campus, representing the crimson and black every Friday.
JaCenda Davidson, who has been Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer since July, and came up with the idea for spirit Fridays.
“Spirit Fridays is a way that faculty staff and students can join together and show their love and support and pride in Whitworth University,” Davidson said.
The goal for Spirit Fridays is to create a sense of camaraderie on campus, according to Davidson.
“It’s a way to give back in a sense, but give back in a sense of just showing with appreciation for the opportunity God has given us and blessed us to be on this campus,” Davidson said.
Every Friday starting on October 4th will be a Spirit Friday. Students are encouraged to wear Whitworth apparel and accessories as well as crimson and black.
Faculty will be allowed to dress more casually on Spirit Fridays as well.
“Even work-appropriate jeans are okay for employees on Spirit Fridays,” according to the Whitworth email announcement sent on Sept. 26.
However, according to the announcement, “from time to time, business meetings or other events may require employees to dress more formally. Employees are expected to use good judgment regarding this matter.”
The whole Whitworth community is encouraged to participate in Spirit Fridays.
“Anyone that’s affiliated with Whitworth can participate. Faculty, staff and students, alumni and constituencies if they want to,” Davidson said.
The importance of school spirit is apparent to those heading the new tradition.
“I believe when you have engaged faculty, staff and students, you have a thriving university,” Davidson said.
In a recent Instagram post, President Beck Taylor remarked “the first of many Spirit Fridays is coming up,” to remind his followers while showing off a new quarter-zip sweatshirt.
“Let’s show the campus and community how proud we are to be affiliated with Whitworth University,” the email announcement reads. “Gear up for Friday, October 4, and every Spirit Fridays after that!”
