Senior captain Carter Comito grabs two first place wins at the Idaho Collegiate II meet in Moscow, Idaho on Saturday to highlight Whitworth’s performance. Comito marked a throw of 59’3’’ (a personal best) in the shot put and a 184-06’’ (an indoor personal best) in the discus throw. As a captain, Comito tries to keep from getting tense and nervous.

“You need to be relaxed and focused to throw far,” Comito said.

The goals for the season were shared among the team. The early achievements and personal bests were shown from returning sophomore Joseph Green who took second in pole vault with a 15’01’’ clearance. The 4×400 relay team snatched up third with a time of 3:28.57. Senior captain Frank Lima won another third place for the Bucs in high jump with a 6’05’’ clearance.  Although unhappy with his performance senior captain Shannon Winant took third in the triple jump with a mark of 43-07.25’’.

“I was hoping to jump far enough to get me to nationals,” Winant said. “That did not happen, but I ended my indoor career with an indoor personal best, and my teammates did awesome.”

Junior decathlete Peter Delap won the decathlon wrapping up with a final score of 4,428 last Sunday. This score improved Delap to a mark that ranks in the top 30 decathletes in the nation.

“My goal by the end of the season is to qualify for nationals in the decathlon,” Delap said.

As spoken by the captains, the outdoor season is just as promising as the indoor season as proven this weekend.

“The men’s team is looking stronger than it has ever looked this early in the season,” Winant said.

These words were echoed by Comito.

“The team this year has more talent than any of the last three years. We are very deep in all the events and we are going to do huge things this year. I hope every athlete is able to qualify for conference and achieve their goals for this season,” Comito said. “We had a solid indoor season and we should have a huge outdoor season.”
