Women’s Tennis
The Whitworth women’s tennis team shut out the Puget Sound Loggers 9-0 in their first home NWC match Friday.
The win improved the Pirates to 4-2 overall, 3-0 NWC. The Loggers are 2-3 overall, 2-3 NWC.
The doubles team of Rachel Burns and Alli Marshall won the first set 8-0. With each doubles team posting a win, the singles competition followed suit. Burns defeated Mattie Holtz 6-0, 6-0 at #1, while Marshall topped Jenna Gerdsen 6-0, 6-1 at #3. Erica Bosman beat Maddie Thiesse 6-3, 6-1 at #2 singles.
Katie Staudinger beat Logan Thompson 6-3, 6-2 at #4, while Megan Wingfield won 7-5, 6-2 at #5 over Ada Yu. Siri Carlson completed the team sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Marissa Friedman at #6 singles.
The Pirates will return to action on March 5th when they take on Whitman in Walla Walla.
Men’s Tennis
The Whitworth men’s tennis beat the Puget Sound Loggers Friday in Tacoma, Wash. The 8-1 victory temporarily improved the Bucs to 3-4 overall, 2-1 NWC.
All singles won and two of the three doubles teams won.
Heading to Tulatin, Ore., the Bucs fell 5-4 to Pacific posting a current season record of 3-5 overall, 2-2 NWC.
The Pirates had a 2-1 lead after doubles matches, with Colin Zalewski and Joe Wales winning 8-3 at #1 doubles and Cameron Williams and Micah Spaun 8-6 at #3 doubles.
Williams topped Derek Cooley 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at #4 singles.
Whitworth will host nationally-ranked Whitman next Saturday at the Scotford Tennis Center in its only scheduled competition of the week.
