The current political climate within the United States, specifically when it comes to refugees and immigrants, is one of uncertainty. Spokane is not immune to these shifts, but many businesses or non-profits have stayed true to their missions to support these individuals and families. Organizations such as Thrive International and World Relief Spokane serve as housing organizations which aim to assist refugees in America who are trying to gain their footing as they adjust to a new location.
Thrive International describes themselves as, “a diverse group of innovators who share a vision for thriving multicultural communities.” Created in 2021, they provide temporary housing as well as empowerment and educational opportunities for international refugees, including driving classes, and the Bloom Together program that encourages women’s empowerment. Expanding to the surrounding areas within Washington and Northern Idaho, this organization makes efforts to diversify the community and ensure that refugees are provided a path to success within the U.S. To get involved with Thrive International, they have volunteer opportunities as well as occasional job openings.

World Relief Spokane is a similar program that emphasizes the partnership between faith and providing assistance for refugees. They are a Christian organization who works with local churches to help refugees find housing, educational opportunities and support for basic needs. World Relief describes their mission as Church centered, holistic and sustainable. As a global program, they are directly working with international catastrophes to be a point of support for the most vulnerable communities; their branch in Spokane is just one of many around the globe. Additionally, they also have general information about immigrant rights, legal processes and different resources for refugees. They have been in Spokane for the last 30 years and have worked with over 11,000 immigrants in the local area. World Relief has volunteer opportunities, places to donate, including item donation and different internships. Both programs emphasize their mission of inviting compassionate workers and people who are excited about promoting multicultural communities.
