The City of Spokane hosts a total of 87 parks, each offering a unique way to experience the city’s natural beauty. From peaceful gardens to lively downtown spaces, these parks provide diverse settings for people to relax, explore and connect. While Spokane is home to several major parks, such as Riverfront Park, Manito Park and Finch Arboretum, this guide will feature parks that have impacted the Whitworth community.
Riverfront Park, centrally located in downtown Spokane, is a well-known spot. The Spokane River flows through Riverfront Park, offering people a place to rest and listen to the sounds of the water. Moreover, Riverfront Park features the Spokane Falls, which includes both the Upper and Lower Falls for people to enjoy.
Some of the community’s favorite trails in the area include the Spokane River Walk, Spokane Falls Trail, River Loop to Sandifur Memorial Bridge and the Spokane Lower Falls Overlook. You can find detailed information about these trails on the AllTrails website or mobile application. On top of stunning scenic walking trails, Jadon Claps, a junior at Whitworth University, said the park was a great way to get a feel for the city. “The waterfalls are beautiful, and there are nice trails leading down to them,” he said.
Riverfront Park also features a variety of activities for kids and families. “I love going to Riverfront Park with my grandchildren. They love to slide down the giant red wagon slide, and they like to ride on the carousel there as well,” Debbie Stierwalt, program assistant of the theology department, shared. “Just walking around some of the new wonderful playgrounds they have put in for younger children is fantastic,” she added.

Another Spokane classic, Manito Park, offers a natural botanical atmosphere. It differs from other parks and is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the moment. Senior business student Anu Rathnayake especially loves the Rose Garden, where she spends time capturing photos of the vibrant flowers, trees and sunsets. “I love taking pictures of all the different kinds of roses,” she shared. Manito Park is also a highlight during the holidays, when it transforms into a glowing winter wonderland with festive lights and food vendors.
Kendall Yards, while not specifically a city park, brings a mix of nature and city life, with its scenic river views and lively summer markets. Local vendors set up booths selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts, on Wednesday evenings from May to September. Marketing major Nia Tesfaye enjoys the energy of the market and the variety of things to see. “They sell everything from honey to hair accessories,” she said.
Whether it’s the excitement of Riverfront Park, the beauty of Manito’s gardens, or the lively vibe of Kendall Yards, Spokane’s parks offer something for everyone. They bring people together, create lasting memories and make Spokane more special.
