The first half of the Whitworth women’s golf season has officially come to an end. Their fall season lasted from mid-September to mid-October. The team will have a few months to train, improve and regroup before the spring season starts. The 2025-26 team is young, with three freshmen, one transfer student and no seniors. During their fall season, the team excelled on the course and in tournaments. Junior veteran Rosalind Nordberg said, “We were in the top three a few times and we came really close to being in that first or second spot, as little as eight strokes.”
Freshman Charlie Oyler explained that being a freshman player is “definitely hard because you’re adjusting to school life and moving away from your family and starting a new spot.” However, Oyler described how being on the golf team made the transition easier. She said, “Over half the team is new to the school. So it’s definitely a good community, and I feel very supported. Coming into a school where you don’t maybe know a bunch of people, you already have a built-in community with your team.”
Nordberg explained how, having a new team with only three returners, nobody knew what the team dynamic would be like. “We weren’t really sure what to expect, but it turned out to be really awesome.” She explained that “The team this year is… at a really good spot in terms of skill level and experience.”
Oyler attributes the team’s success to their skills. She said, “I think a lot of the team’s strength is, well, obviously from our skill set. I think the team is very much advanced in our skills in comparison to our conference.” She also explained that the “team dynamic is really good … we all get along very well.”
The fall season provided the team with plenty of opportunities to develop their relationships with one another. Traveling to tournaments especially helped build bonds between team members and strengthen the overall team dynamic. Nordberg said, “We kind of have to travel because we don’t get to have many tournaments up here… but it’s really a good time to bond with the team. We got to have all our players travel to a tournament in Walla Walla, which was super fun.” The women’s golf team finished in third place at the Walla Walla tournament with a final score of 639.
The team has high hopes for the spring season. The team believes that they have a real chance to move into a top spot in the Northwest Conference (NWC) standings and hopes to improve their skills in order to achieve that goal. Nordberg explained that “I think that’s really in reach for us to really get that step better and get into those top spots at tournaments, and also to place really well at the end of the year, when all the conference points are added up.”
Oyler also expressed how she hopes the team will continue to bond and develop. She said, “I would like to go in the spring season already having improved from where I left off… but also my hope is just to get closer with my team, and honestly, just make more friendships and to strengthen them.”
Whitworth came in fourth at the NWC 2024-25 season with a final score of 646. Given their 639 score at Walla Walla, which earned them third place, the 2025-26 women’s golf team shows much promise and potential to perform very well in future tournaments.
