Just last week I found myself asking God to use me to do something big in the world. I thought about people such as Blake Mycoskie who started TOMs or people such as Jim Elliot who died on the mission field trying to reach out to people and share love with them. Then on Sunday night I found myself in the basement of Baldwin-Jenkins partaking in the worship night called The Well. I stood there in awe of the passion in the room and how evident it was that the Holy Spirit was there touching people through the worship, videos and time of prayer. It was incredible hearing that some guys in BJ have continually put this on week after week; it was evidently impacting people’s lives.
Then, girls on my hall were telling me all about the Awake ministry that they have been attending and I went with them to the More Than a One Night Stand event that this ministry help put on. I was inspired, convicted, moved, you name the feeling I probably felt it last week. Too often, I think because of our human nature, we tend to feel the desire to do something huge with our lives and are not satisfied until we do. Keep dreaming big, but don’t let yourself be shielded from the ministry you can be apart of all around you while you are waiting for something you think might be bigger to happen.
We need to begin to learn to be purely happy with where we are and what we are doing and let God use us to glorify his kingdom each and every day.
Why not gather people together and sing songs to our King in a basement?
What is stopping us from doing morning devotions in the library?
What is blocking you from leading a small group in your dorm?
Don’t continue to come up with more excuses. You can’t be too busy to show God’s love and you can’t be too young to help others. The apostle Paul even told Timothy to not let anyone tell him he is too young to do what he was. Have you seen the Perspectives label around on computer stickers, beanies, shirts and hoodies? I have.
Did you see their video on Facebook? I did. I don’t think they had a dream to start Perspectives but then reclined back and said ‘God I can’t wait until five or ten years from now when you use me to make this dream a reality, I can’t wait until you use me to share stories, I can’t wait until you use me to help people.’ No, they had a dream, they felt a calling and they started to make Perspectives come to life with the people around them and the resources they had. Let these people, these stories and these ministries inspire you like they inspired me.
Don’t wait until you think you are ready to do something that spreads God’s love, because you are ready now, you just don’t know it. Start by getting involved now.
Change the world here, and see where it takes you.
