The Whitworth women’s golf team beat Community Colleges of Spokane in a dual match at Indian Canyon in Spokane on Saturday. Senior Emily Guthrie, ranked No. 5 nationally at the Division III level, shot a two-under par 72 on the day to lead the Pirates, her lowest round of the season.
“Her putting has improved a lot and she is hitting the ball very well,” head coach Katie Fuqua said.
The match consisted of only one round and featured four Whitworth women golfers against five Spokane Community College golfers and an independent competitor. The team finished with a combined stroke total of 322 strokes and 26 strokes over par, while Community Colleges of Spokane combined for a total of 372 strokes for 76 strokes over par.
Freshman Chelsea Bayley shot a seven-over par 81 to finish second overall behind Guthrie.
“There was a small glitch in her swing that caused her to miss some greens,” Fuqua said. “But I’m sure she’ll get that ironed out in practice this week and have her game ready to go for the weekend.”
Freshman Yvonne LaCoursiere finished with a nine-over par 83 for third overall. The fourth and final golfer for Whitworth, sophomore Nicole Lomax, finished tied for fourth overall with a round total of 86.
“Our team is peaking at the right time, cohesiveness is great and everyone is pushing each other to improve,” Fuqua said.
Next up for the Pirates is the Northwest Conference Championships at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore. on April 20-21 beginning at 11 a.m.
