What made you choose to major in Sociology?Well, I came into college knowing that I’m not necessarily a math student or a science student, and I wanted to pursue my dream of running children’s homes in Africa, as cliché as it sounds coming from a Whitworth student. I just feel like I will learn from the people I’ll be working alongside and serving, which will be a humbling experience. As far as my major goes, sociology will give me a good foundation for what I want to do and what I want to be.
How has Whitworth helped prepare you for your future?
With a lot of sociology classes, I can apply what I learn to what I see for my future. I have been able to meet other students who have the same kind of passions and network in that way. That has probably been the most valuable part of it, since I don’t necessarily need to be in college for what I want to do.
What are a few things that you want to do before you pursue creating a children’s home in Africa?
One fun thing I’ve considered is going to stunt school just for the heck of it before it’s time to face reality and jump into a career and everything. Crazy stuff like that just gives me a sort of thrill. I think it would be so fun. I also want to travel to Europe with my friend Kristen.
What are your plans for this summer?
This summer, I’m going to Uganda with Loving One By One ministries. Going there will help me to decide how I want to go about my own ministry. The ministry has homes run by a woman there who is like a mother to them. It’s like a family, and the kids from the home and from the community go to school there. We’ll be helping with the children mostly, because all the children need some sense of comfort. We’ll also be helping in the school and having medical clinics to make sure the kids and the community are healthy.
