The Whitworth women’s basketball team ended a three-game losing streak with a 73-67 win over Willamette Feb. 13 at the Whitworth Fieldhouse, improving to 11-11 overall, 7-6 in the NWC.
Five players scored in double figures, led by Emily Guthrie’s 14 points, helping Whitworth reclaim fourth place in the Northwest Conference standings.
The Bearcats (3-17, 2-11) took an early 16-12 lead, assisted by a three-pointer from Alex Zennan. Whitworth answered with an 11-4 run to claim a 29-26 lead. Zennan drained a three before halftime to tie the game 31-31.
The second half was close, with three ties and five lead changes in the first seven minutes, and Whitworth took a 48-46 lead with Lauren Picha’s three-pointer. But Willamette went on an 8-0 run a few minutes later, tying the game 58-58.
With just under four minutes left in the game, Emily Guthrie hit a three, and the Pirates would not give up their lead again.
Guthrie was 4-8 from the three-point range. Jamie Lyons scored 13 points for Whitworth, and Taylor Taylor added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Emily Travis also scored 11 points, and Picha had 10 points.
Alex Zennan scored a game-high 18 points for Willamette.
Whitworth rebounded well, with a 48-37 margin over the Bearcats, and both teams had their share of turnovers, with 22 Pirate turnovers to Willamette’s 19.
Whitworth will host George Fox Saturday, and Willamette will play Whitman.
