The Whitworth women’s tennis team (3-2, 2-0 NWC) defeated Willamette 6-3 in Oregon on Saturday.
Junior Erica Bosman, sophomore Megan Wingfield and junior Claire Hemming led Whitworth with victories in both singles and doubles matches.
Bosman and senior Katie Staudinger defeated Willamette’s Katie Huber and Emily Bee 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Bosman then came back from a first set loss to beat Katie Huber 1-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (11-9) in No. 3 singles.
Wingfield and Hemming won 8-5 in the No. 3 doubles contest, and Wingfield defeated Fabi Dieguez 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Hemming gained a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Emily Bee at No. 6 singles.
The Pirates’ final win came when junior Alli Marshall beat Shannon Palmer 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles spot. At No. 1 singles, senior Rachel Burns fell to Willamette’s Natalia Agarycheva 6-1, 6-1. Agarycheva was the top player in the NWC last spring.
The Whitworth women will host the University of Puget Sound next Friday in their only match of the week.
