The Whitworth men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams both took first place victories over six other competing teams at the Puget Sound Invitational last Saturday in Tacoma, WA.
The women’s team took first place in six events and finished the competition with 184 points. The men’s team placed first in five events with an overall score of 121.5.
In the women’s hurdle events, senior Tiara Pajimola placed first with 16.10 in the 100-meter event and junior Maggie Callan placed first in the 400-meter event with 1:06.23.
Callan would also be apart of the winning 4×400 meter relay team along with sophomores Bailey Scott, Kathryn Jentz, and senior Ally McConnell with a time of 4:09.75.
Seniors Kellyn Roiko and Kendall Chin placed first (11:15.32) and second (11:31.84), respectively in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Sophomore Kayla Brase took a pair of first place victories in the long (16‘ 6.5“) and triple (36‘ 6.75“) jump events.
Overall, the women’s team placed in the top five in all events.
On the men’s side, freshman Jalen Robinson-McClure won the 400-meter dash (50.66) and also took second place in the 200-meter dash (23.14).
The 4×400 meter relay team made up of sophomores Jacob Sturtevant, John-Robert Woolley and seniors Alex Hardlund and Nicholas Gosselin took first place in a time of 3:35.30.
With a 15‘ 1“ vault, junior Everett Kleven took first place over 12 other competitors in the pole vault.
Juniors Cheyne Shiroma and Dane Larson were the sole competitors in the triple jump event where Shiroma jumped 40“ and Larson jumped 39“ 11.25“.
In the discus throwing event, seniors Naji Saker and Scott Mayfield placed first and second with 151‘ 11“ and 147‘ 4“ throws, respectively.
Overall, the men placed in the top five in 14 out of 18 events.
The Pirates will continue their season by hosting a dual meet against Lewis-Clark State in the Whitworth Pine Bowl this Tuesday at 2:45 p.m.
