Rohrbach saves women’s tennis from sweep at Whitman

Whitworth Women’s Tennis had a tough away weekend as they headed to Walla Walla to face Whitman College. The loss drops the Pirates to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in Northwest Conference play.

Whitworth lost to Whitman with a score of 8-1 with their only win coming in a singles match.

“It was a tough match and Whitman has amazing players but the team fought to the last point in all the matches,” senior Bella Hoyos said. “The team knows the importance of coming out strong and we need to continue to improve every match.”

Hoyos lost her match against Whitman number one Andrea Gu with a score of 6-4, 2-6, and 8-10.

“I came out strong but I lost focus,” Hoyos said. “I have confidence for the next time we play them.”

Whitworth did have one winner in Paige Rohrbach. She won her match 6-3, 6-1.

“Paige was amazing and she played a tough opponent,” Hoyos said. “For the team, this was a big win as she played really hard and definitely deserved the win.”

The Whitworth women will be back at home next weekend  to face Pacific University and Willamette University. Saturday’s match against Pacific begins at 10 a.m. and Sunday’s against Willamette starts at 9 a.m. in the Scotford Tennis Center.

Pacific won their last match 7-2 against University of Puget Sound and Willamette lost their last match 9-0 to George Fox. Whitworth will be looking to win both games as they head into this next weekend.
