This weekend was filled with ups and downs for the Whitworth women’s golf team, but it was memorable to say the least. According to senior Katie Ochoa, as a team they tied for the school low record, shooting a 307. This is something that hasn’t been done since spring conference, when Ochoa was a freshman.

On Saturday the team played at Wine Valley golf course, facing 30 mph winds.

Overall it “wasn’t ideal and no doubt made it difficult, but you have to deal with the conditions and get the job done regardless”,  Ochoa said.

The second day the team had much better conditions playing at Veterans Memorial. Going into Sunday they had the goal to get their scores down even lower. Jaymie Pentony, ‘18, shot a 74; Amy Wagner, ‘21, shot a 76; Ochoa shot a 77; an improvement from Saturday’s scores. Overall Wagner came in third place, and Pentony right behind in fourth  place.

When discussing the future, Ochoa stated that some things that the women’s golf team are looking forward to is getting to compete with more of the teams from the Northwest conference.  So far all the tournaments have been invitationals, so not all of the teams from the conference have been there. The next two tournaments coming up the team will face George Fox University, a big competitor. The team is feeling like they are getting into a groove where they are consistently shooting 70s.  

On an individual level,Ochoa has eyes on first or second team all conference. This is based off the average score for whole season.

Women’s golf will be back in action next weekend, Oct. 7 and 8 at the Culturame Classic, playing at The Reserve in Aloha, Oregon.
