This past weekend the Whitworth women’s golf team competed at the NWC fall tournament at The Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Oregon. Out of the seven teams present the Pirates finished the tournament in third place with score of 323 for the first day and 315 for the second day, for a total team score of 638. In front of them was defending Northwest conference champions George Fox, as well as Whitman. The Pirates had all five players complete the tournament in the top 20 with two players finishing in the top 10.
Freshman Amy Wagner led the way for the team, finishing individually in a tie for fourth place. Senior Madison Pillo completed the tournament in the top 10 as well, with score of 158 which put her in 8th place. Sophomore Maggie Peters shot a 160, putting her in 13th place, Senior Katie Ochoa finished in 18th with sophomore Jaymie Pentony right behind in 19th.
“We have two classic tournaments and each one is worth 25 percent and the conference tournament is worth 50 percent and this weekend was a good indicator of where we stand,” Pentony said. The team ended up only 16 points behind Whitman, a team they are aiming to beat in the conference tournament. All of the teams from the NWC were present at the tournament, however, Linfield and Willamette did not have full teams.
While the Pirates are done competing for the fall portion of their season, you can find them back on the golf course in the spring. Pentony said some individual goals she has for the spring season are “making first-team or second-team all conference and keeping two day tournament scores in the 150’s all while enjoying the team and having a positive attitude.” As for the team they are working towards shooting under 300 for one tournament in the spring, Pentony said.
