The Pirates beat the Pacific University Boxers 30-20 on October 28th. The Whitworth run game continued to impress with 216 total yards of offense, 174 of those coming from running back Mason Elms, ‘19, who also made two touchdowns. Quarterback Ian Kolstee, ‘18, added another stellar passing performance to his resume this season despite concerns over an injured ankle. Kolstee threw for 233 yards with no interceptions. Garret McKay, ‘18, also added an explosive 82-yard punt return. The Pirates receiving corps displayed their depth with four receivers hauling in at least 40 yards worth of receptions. Nick Kiourkas, ‘18, extended his streak of games with at least one reception to 39 straight games.

The game was a constant battle. Each team would make a stop on defense and then almost immediately return to the offensive side to set up a scoring drive. Ian Kolstee took the pirates 72 yards down field to result in a Rehn Reiley, ‘19, field goal. This would give the Pirates a 20-13 lead at the half. The Pirates would continue the onslaught in the third quarter scoring another ten points by way of Mason Elms’ 87 yard run, and another Reiley field goal.

The Pirate defense showed up in full force once again. Defensive back Zach Hillman, ‘21, intercepted a pass from Pacific quarterback JT Greenough, and returned it 25 yards. The Pirate defense held the Boxers to 31 percent third down efficiency. All-NWC wide receiver Kobe Williams of Pacific was held to only one catch. Patch Kulp, ‘18, lead the defense with 10 tackles with Kale Wong, ‘20, and Shai Pulawa, ‘19, each wrapping up eight. Pulawa also added a forced fumble which was recovered.  The Pirates never allowed the Boxers to score more than a touchdown in a single quarter.
