This past weekend the Whitworth men’s cross country team competed at the West Regional meet in Claremont, California. The Pirates ranked tenth in the region going into the race, however exceeded expectations with an eighth place finish in 236 points. Pomona Pitzer as well as UC Santa Cruz took home first and second place. In the Northwest Conference the pirates finished right behind Pacific Lutheran, Willamette, and Lewis & Clark.
Leading the way for the Pirates was senior Come Nzibarega, finishing the 8 kilometer race in 26:24, a 27th place finish. Second to cross the line for the team was senior Grant Bingham finishing with a time of 27:03, finishing right behind Bingham was sophomore Gabriel Meek in 27:13. Senior Dan Harper finished in 27:27, 55th place, and freshman William Glick rounded out the scoring for the Pirates finishing the race in 27:29. Sophomore Nathaniel Anderson in addition to freshman Jacob Clark also competed for the Pirates. All five scorers finished in the top 55, with Nzibarega’s 27th place finishing earning him all region honors.
“I had one of my best races, beating guys who have beat me in other races throughout the season. With one of my biggest accomplishments this year being adapting to college training without getting injured” Glick said, looking back at the race and season as a whole. “It was a great location to run at, hard to complain about running in California”. Glick said regarding the course.
The West Regional meet was the last race of the 2017 cross country season for the men’s side.
