Whitworth maintains an even record at 4-4 after traveling to Tacoma for the weekend.
The Whitworth baseball team struggled in the opener, losing to the Puget Sound Loggers 4 to 10. The loggers came out strong, clobbering 10 out of 16 runs. Pirate’s senior Kevin Valerio hit a home run and doubled in a run while Landon Scott hit his first home run of the season.
Looking for revenge, the pirates went out determined in game two, finishing 11 to 10 ahead of the Loggers. Freshman Tyler Pfeffer went 2-5 and drove in five runs in the second game. Tied at 7-7 in the seventh inning, Pfeffer hit the game changing ball to bring the Pirates to victory. Gaining his first career victory on the mound, pitcher Ryan Beliel threw two innings of scoreless relief.
Sunday morning ended with a dominating 11 to 4 win for the Pirates in game three against the Loggers. Pfeffer earned the Pirates five runs and four-game series. CJ Perry pitched the first six innings, improving to 2-0 this season, while Eric Anderson earned his first save of the season after pitching the final three innings.
Despite a comeback from a slow start, Whitworth lost their final game 6 to 10.
Whitworth will travel to Caldwell, Idaho next Saturday and Sunday to face College of Idaho.
