Rev. Stephanie Nobles-Beans Whitworth’s associate Chaplain for Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Ministry recently founded Whitworth’s new mentorship program called Brown Girl Magic (BGM).  

The mentorship program is aimed towards women of color striving for leadership roles in the Whitworth community and beyond. The group is currently working on a project called “Socks for Sole,” which is collecting sock donations for homeless people in Spokane. According to data collected by the Spokane City website in 2017, there were 1,090 homeless people in Spokane County. 13% of those people had no shelter, while 78% were sheltered. 73% of the sheltered homeless were in emergency shelters. The shocking statistics emphasize the importance of projects like these for the Spokane community. 

“People of color don’t always receive the support that they need on campus. BGM helps foster our confidence as we work to be included in leadership positions,” said Feven Christiansen, BGM mentor.
