The Whitworth Pirates men’s and women’s golf teams finished second and fourth respectively at this weekend’s NWC championship golf tournaments which concluded the season for both teams. Both teams finished third overall in the final conference standings.
In the men’s competition, freshman Jesse Salzwedel finished fifth overall with a total of 73-76-149 while senior Cameron Whittle tied for sixth with a 75-75-150 to lead Whitworth. Sophomore Christian Boudreau tied for 17th and senior Ryan Young tied for 20th. Freshman Stephen Plopper claimed 24th place while junior Jeff Aly tied for 29th.
Whitworth had a final team score of 307-304-611, sixteen strokes behind the tournament champion Linfield Wildcats.
Whitworth’s second place finish was the highest for the team in a conference event this year, and helped the Bucs to edge Pacific University for third place in the final NWC standings.
In the women’s tournament, Pirate junior Elizabeth Martin led the women’s team, finishing in 13th place with a two-day score of 78-88-166. Freshmen Ashley Danforth and Katie O’Neill tied for 19th place while sophomore Emily Guthrie finished in 22nd place. Junior Darby Moberg finished in a tie for 24th and fellow junior Haley Owens tied for 28th.
The team total in the tournament for the Pirates was 335-340-675. After placing fourth in the tournament, the Bucs finished third overall this season behind Whitman and league champion George Fox.
