Last weekend in Banks, Oregon the Whitworth men’s golf team competed in the NWC fall classic tournament getting the opportunity to see how they stood against the rest of the conference the men ended up finishing in 4th place. Starting out strong, the team shot a score of 288 on the first day of the tournament, putting them in second place right behind Willamette University. However, they shot a 296 for the second day, giving them a final team score of 584. The Pirates finished up behind Willamette, George Fox, as well as Pacific Lutheran University.
Junior Elijah Pittser lead the way for the Pirates, shooting a total score of 143, which put him in sixth place. Sophomore Triston Hartfiel finished in eighth place with a score of 146. This put two Pirates in the top ten. Tying for eleventh place was Junior Ryan Brown with a score of 147, Sophomore Reilly Hegarty was right behind shooting a 148, and with a score of 159 was Sophomore Sam Stiles.
The Pirates have two weeks off until they compete again at the Whitman Invitational in Walla Walla on Oct 28-29. At the tournament they will get one more chance of the fall season to redeem themselves facing George Fox and Whitman from the Northwest conference. Going into the next tournament Hartfiel stated the importance of staying focused throughout the entire tournament, even when things start not going their way. This past tournament was their first “classic” which accounts for 25%. The next classic will account for 25% as well, with the conference tournament accounting for 50% for the conference title.
