Executive Vice Presidential Candidate: Christine Whiteaker

Major: Mathematics

Year: Junior

Editorial Board: What is your class load like for next year and what will your other responsibilities be?

Christine Whiteaker: It’ll be a pretty easy load. I am studying abroad in Jan Term on the History of Math and Europe trip.

EB: Why are you running for this ASWU position/why are you a qualified candidate?

CW: I decided to run beginning of the school year and I saw Melinda do it and I thought I could do it. I like having conversations with people (one-on-ones). I have a problem being confrontational; I’ve had to do it a couple of times this year and I’ve learned from it.

EB: What do you think is the greatest need of the student body? How do you propose we meet that need?

CW: Something I’ve seen recently is I don’t think ASWU is as transparent as it should be. Getting people to the meetings is something I would like to work on. Maybe informing students about speakers too.

EB: What are your feelings about transparency in ASWU?

CW: It’s really something that should be emphasized more next year. An important part of that would be inviting RA teams and seeing if they would like to come and generally just getting more people there.

EB: What three things specifically do you want to have accomplished by the end of the first semester?

CW: 1. I would really like to see the senators working well together and coming to me with questions and knowing that I’m there to support them.

2. Get more guests at our ASWU meetings.

3. When I was a senator I always wanted feedback from the students and I would like to send out a survey to their constituents to get them feedback on how they’re doing.

EB: What is the relationship between ASWU and the Whitworthian?

CW: I know the Whitworthian supports ASWU on a lot of things and gets the chance to inform students on a lot of things. I haven’t had a chance to work that closely with the Whitworthian yet.

EB: Why should we vote for you, rather than your opponent?

CW:  I do have the experience. I know about this job and I know how to run the voting. I know how to do that, and its not really a learning curve for me.

EB: Is there anything else we need to know about you to make this decision?

CW: I really have enjoyed EVP this semester. It’s been a very interesting process because I was a peer to the senators and then I was an overseer. It has been a difficulty. I think next year it will be a lot easier. I really enjoy just getting to know the senators and I think there have been more guests at the meetings. I think that’s just an important part of EVP and it’s worked well. I like to be a supporter to someone and I don’t need to be the main attraction.
