What is your class load like for next year and what will your other responsibilities be?
My class load is looking so dreamy. I am so excited because it’s going to be pretty chill. I only have one class left in my major and a bunch of gen eds. I think it’s like 15 credits or something like that and two of the credits I will be taking over the summer. As far as other responsibilities go, none.
Why are you running for this ASWU position?
I am running for FVP because I have been on ASWU for the last two years and I have gotten to watch this position evolve and change. I am in love with the idea of what ASWU does. I think it’s so uniquely positioned and really cool just watching the FVP position. Getting involved with the different committees that they oversee seems really exciting. I love the detail-oriented focus and I get excited over balancing the budget. I think that’s really cool. It combines all of the things that I love.
What does the FVP do?
The FVP takes the student fee that we pay, that very ambiguous $130, and puts it toward a purpose. They give your fee a purpose and allocate that. They work with ASWU and the students at large to fairly distribute that as best as they possibly can. As part of budget committee, they get to work with the student body as far as like money concerns go, so different programming and aiding in the funding for programming, which I think is really cool because you get access to all the diverse programming happening on campus. And then they are really uniquely positioned to work with the clubs and encourage the clubs, as far as club council goes.
What finance-related experience do you bring to this position?
I have been involved in budget committee, in finance committee. I have been involved with the trustee endowment committee. I am part of the student investment group, I have taken a financial accounting class. I think as far as finance goes, that’s it.
What are two goals that you want to have accomplished by the end of the first semester if elected?
I think a goal that is maybe often overlooked in efforts of being like ‘Yeah’ (with excitement). I think it’s really important to get your bearings and get your feet underneath you before you start making waves. So like know what you are coming in on, kind of thing. Maybe that would be more of a personal goal. And then, it kind of happens in waves currently. I think it’s really cool when clubs come into the ASWU meetings and they’re like, ‘Hey, this is what we are doing.’
We heard from Sci-Fi club last week and they had all of these events that everyone at the table didn’t know about and we were like, ‘We totally would have gone to that. That’s so cool. Of course I would love to come and make a Harry Potter wand.’
So I think what I would do is I would really encourage clubs to tell ASWU what’s going on in their realm because I think ASWU has so many different outlets as far as information movement goes and we can really encourage that diverse programming from the clubs.
What are your weaknesses in terms of the position you’re running for?
I think getting everybody to care as much as I do about this position. I think that’s kind of hard. Maybe just like ASWU in general, getting people to care about it or getting people to be as passionate as I am. Or I like to say yes to a lot of things, especially when they are good things and they’re presented to me. How do you say no to a good thing, you know? And so I tend to spread myself a little bit thin.
Is there anything else we need to know about you to make this decision?
I’m really excited about this position. I think that it kind of is one that flies under the radar a lot of times. I was walking around door to door and my first question was,’Hi, I’m running for FVP, do you know what that is?’ And they’re like, ‘No. Is that a new position?’ ‘Nope, nope it’s not.’ So I think bringing a level of excitement and energy to a position that normally just kind of is mellow and gets stuff done.
