The women’s soccer team secured their fourth consecutive win this season after beating Pacific University 1-0 in Forest Grove, Oregon. The Pirates maintain first position in the Northwest Conference with twelve points alongside Pacific Lutheran University.
An effervescent start saw the Pirates overwhelm the Pacific midfield with relentless pressure off the ball. Counter attack preceded counter attack in the early knockings of the game. Neither side had much of the ball for prolonged periods of play. In the 18th minute, a well orchestrated counter attack led to an inviting cross from the right flank to forward Leah Corra, ‘18, who mishit her shot as the ball flashed over the crossbar. Fast paced runs down both flanks characterized the first half. By the 33 rd minute, the Pirates had five shots on goal while Pacific University tested goalkeeper Sienna Tanner, ‘18, twice. She performed exceptionally well alongside the backline to gain her fourth clean sheet this season.
After the first half, the Pirates sought to translate their stern pressure and calculated offense into clinical finishes. They didn’t wait long, as a well orchestrated counter attack led to an accurate cross from the right flank which Corra, tucked in neatly to put the Pirates 1-0 up in the 51st minute. The assist was provided by Shirley Chandler, ‘20.
After this goal, Pacific University turned up the intensity. The Pacific shot count increased by three as the game became increasingly physical and open. A disciplined Pirates defense was up for the challenge. The Pirate offense also displayed their desire through five additional shots post halftime and eight corners in the entire game. Despite edgy encounters and close calls, this open-ended game remained scoreless after the first strike.
The Pirates seek to propel this momentum forward as they face Puget Sound on Sept. 30 and joint first place Pacific Lutheran on Sept. 31. If the Pirates win both of these games, they will soar to the summit of the Northwest Conference whilst securing six consecutive back to back wins.
