Women’s soccer plays great defense on road

by Andrew Forhan

The Whitworth women’s soccer team traveled to Oregon this past weekend for a pair of conference games against the Lewis & Clark Pioneers and the Linfield Wildcats.

The Pirates earned a 3-0 victory over Lewis & Clark on Saturday.

Junior forward Katrin Grant, senior forward Sarah Berentson, and junior midfielder Chelsea Schooler each scored a goal for Whitworth according to coach Jael Hagerott’s statistics. Junior defender Carly Schilperoort assisted two of Whitworth’s three goals.

“LC played a really high line, and our girls figured out how to play the ball in behind,” Hagerott said of the effective offensive play.  “We had forwards who got off to it and they finished.”

Senior goalkeeper Callie Bergstrom made five saves in earning her third shutout of the season.

On Sunday, the Pirates played to a 0-0 draw against the Linfield Wildcats.

Linfield’s defense held Whitworth to just four total shots, while offensively the Wildcats were able to get off 15 shots.  But Whitworth’s defense didn’t break, and Bergstrom made five saves to keep the match scoreless.

“Callie was huge.  She was actually not feeling well at all before the game,” Hagerott said.  “She made an excellent save last two minutes of the game that was one-on-one.”

Linfield and Whitworth are tied for third place in the conference after this past weekend’s matches.  The Pirates play their next two games at home against the Willamette Bearcats next weekend and the Whitman Missionaries the following Wednesday.
