ASWU held elections for new representatives for the 2025-2026 incoming first-year class, resident hall senator and commuter students.
The new representatives for the first-year class of 2029 are Alea Tabi and Logan Roy. The commuter students will be represented by Laney Thomas, Swachchha Deb and Hayden Rosdahl. Seth Phillips is the new Baldwin-Jenkins senator.
The election was finalized on Wednesday, Oct. 8, allowing the newly elected officials to participate in their first ASWU meeting that same evening.
“I was always too scared or too shy to do it, but I thought in college I should be involved to represent the student body,” said Tabi regarding why she decided to run for freshman representative.
Roy had previously been involved in his high school’s student government and is looking forward to Hosanna and engaging with the other first-year students who attend that weekly service.
“I’m just super excited … to be involved in campus ministry,” Roy said.
The representatives received training 45 minutes before the meeting, while officers who were elected last semester had a week of training. The new officers are encouraged to ask questions as they come up throughout the semester.
Throughout their first meeting, the new members participated in the typical ASWU agenda, including hearing student highlights, evaluating club proposals and doing constituency reports.
The students highlighted this week were Megan Hirasaki and Cristian Martinez. Hirasaki was nominated because of her positive attitude while being a student success coach. Martinez was praised for his promptness in offering to do the more difficult tasks during a volunteer program that ASWU attended the weekend prior.
Cam Moore proposed a new club, the Environmental Action Coalition Club. This club would include education on how we impact our environment, clothing swaps to decrease consumerism, documentary screenings and volunteering to clean up our local Spokane community. They emphasized the lack of spending that would be needed to support this group, especially considering their message against overconsumption in general.
An upcoming ASWU event for students to attend is Halloweener Fest which will be held on Oct. 30 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the MPR.
