The student body of Whitworth University was ready for Fall Break, which marked the halfway point of the semester. That week, the Associated Students of Whitworth University (ASWU) meeting was business as usual.
The student highlights were second-year Madalyn Dotson and McMillan Hall senator Kaleb Capeller. They were recognized this week because of the students’ work on the McMillan and Ballard haunted house event that happened on Oct. 18.
During campus updates, the Intercultural Student Center said they are hosting a winter clothing giveaway. Reach out to the International Student Senator, Nina Lessa Susin, for more information regarding donating or receiving winter clothing.
Whitworth’s Black Student Union (BSU) and Business Club gave club updates at the meeting. BSU’s speaker request was Pastor Shon Davis, who is a local pastor from California who now resides in Spokane and advocates against gang affiliation. Davis was approved this week. The Business Club made a request to invite Tyler Volk, an insurance agent in Spokane, to discuss local and international sales techniques.
ASWU President Abby Ruffcorn informed members about the committee she attended last weekend during the Board of Trustees’ visit, where she pitched hiring more security officers for Whitworth’s campus. Ruffcorn said how every member of the Board of Trustees loved the idea, and they plan to implement it this school year. It remains unknown whether the security officers will be students or new faculty.
Ruffcorn then opened the floor to any ASWU members who wanted to share their experiences with the Board of Trustees.
Members who attended the Grounds and Buildings Committee shared how Warren Hall will be reopening in the fall of 2027 and how the PACCAR engineering building will be opening before the end of this 2026 school year.
