Pirates sixth at Spring Classic

The Whitworth women’s golf team finished sixth in the weather-shortened Northwest Conference Spring Classic in Bremerton, Wash. last weekend. The latter half of the two-day event was canceled due to weather and course conditions, making results from day one the final scores.

Freshman Chelsea Bayley finished the opening round of the NWC Spring Classic in first place overall. Bayley shot a three-over par score of 75 to lead all golfers, followed closely by George Fox’s Kelsey Morrison. Morrison shot a first round 76.

Whitworth senior Emily Guthrie finished with a first round score of 85, good enough for 12th place overall. The other top finisher for the Pirates was freshman Yvonne LaCoursiere at tied for 13th with an 86 first-round score.

While Bayley finished first overall with her opening round score, George Fox finished first in the team standings with a combined team total of 322 strokes. Whitman finished in second just five strokes behind the Bruins at 327, followed by Willamette at 344 total strokes. The Pirates finished sixth out of eight conference opponents with a score of 373.

This result puts Whitworth in fourth place in the Northwest Conference standings with six points in the NWC Fall Classic and three in the Spring Classic. George Fox leads the conference with eight points in each NWC match, and they lead Whitman 16-14 heading into the Northwest Conference Championship at Oregon Golf Association Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore. April 20-21. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

The Whitworth women’s team is back in action at the Spokane Community College/Whitworth Dual match at Indian Canyon in Spokane, Wash. The non-conference match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
